Dallas ISD students are about to become walking barcodes, in the best possible way. Starting next school year, every student in the district will receive a standardized ID badge that can be used to ride the bus, grab school meals, check out library books and get into athletic events, all with a single card. The badges will be printed on each campus, featuring a uniform district design dressed up with the individual school’s mascot. District officials say putting everything on one card is meant to simplify daily routines and tighten up campus security.

Plan and timeline

According to Dallas ISD's School Safety page, campuses will print the new badges using a consistent districtwide template that incorporates each school mascot, and students will be able to use the cards for transportation, cafeteria purchases, library checkouts and entry into athletic events. The initiative page also notes that campuses will receive software and integration systems, dual-sided printers and webcams, pre-punched cards, lanyards and on-site group training so staff can handle badge production and everyday use on site.

Dallas ISD's The Hub lists the rollout as beginning in the 2026–27 school year, while the initiative page on the School Safety site references 2025–26, a discrepancy in the district's online materials that the district has not clarified in those posts.

North Texas trend

Dallas ISD is not alone in moving toward a one-card system. Nearby Garland ISD has announced expanded student ID badge requirements across all grades starting in the 2026–27 school year. A bit farther out, Community ISD is piloting RFID badges for secondary students, with plans to issue one free RFID card per student in 2026–27 for bus tracking and possible additional uses in the future.

What families should know

The district has released an explanatory video to walk families through how the universal badge system is supposed to work. District materials say campus leaders will share details on when and how badges will be distributed, along with rules and costs for replacement cards, once each school has its plan locked in. Families are advised to contact their school’s main office with any immediate questions.
