A 19-year-old man was killed and two others were wounded after gunfire ripped through a Vancouver street early Monday, police said. Officers rushed in shortly after midnight and found the young man with life-threatening injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors and 911 callers reported a large group of teens crowding the street and said bystanders were trying desperately to perform CPR.
Police say they were dispatched at roughly 12:37 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the 3500 block of Creston Avenue and arrived to find multiple victims. That included a female with non-life-threatening injuries and another person who appeared to have been hurt in a physical fight, according to KPTV. Callers told 911 there were about 25 to 30 young people in the street and that someone was doing CPR on a person lying in the roadway.
Police probe and tip line
The Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case, and investigators have not released any suspect descriptions or a possible motive. The city’s police newsroom notes that the Major Crimes Team typically handles fatal shootings and lists a recorded tip line at (360) 487-7399 for anyone with information or video, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
Weekend context
According to KPTV, the Creston Avenue shooting was the second time gunfire hit Vancouver over the weekend. On Saturday night two teenagers were treated for gunshot wounds after a disturbance at Evergreen Park and are expected to survive, police said. Investigators say there is no confirmed link between the two incidents.
What investigators want
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has video from the area to contact the VPD tip line at (360) 487-7399 so they can follow up. The investigation remains active as officers continue canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage.
