
A deadly Sunday afternoon crash on U.S. 50 in Dayton shut down the highway in both directions near Segale Road, killing one person and sending at least one other to a hospital while traffic snarled across the Carson Valley.
The multi-vehicle collision involved a semi and two other vehicles, bringing Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and local emergency crews to the scene as they worked to clear wreckage and investigate the crash. Officials on scene warned the closure could last two to four hours, and traffic was diverted onto alternate routes.
At 4:13 p.m., Nevada State Police posted a traffic alert on X stating that U.S. 50 at Segale Road was closed in both directions “due to a fatal crash” and confirming that troopers were investigating a multi-vehicle collision involving a semi and two other vehicles. The post said traffic was being diverted around the scene and noted that a Care Flight helicopter transported at least one patient to a local hospital.
US 50 Safety Concerns In East Dayton
This stretch of U.S. 50 through east Dayton has seen several serious collisions in recent months, including a fatal crash at River Boat Road in April and another deadly collision near Rainbow Drive in May, incidents that have renewed scrutiny of traffic conditions along the busy corridor, according to KOLO.
Amid that increased attention, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Lyon County activated a new traffic signal at Traditions Parkway and Segale Road in April, according to Carson Now.
State transportation officials have also scheduled resurfacing and other improvements on U.S. 50 east of Dayton, according to NDOT.
Traffic Impacts And What Drivers Should Know
Motorists were urged to avoid the area while investigators worked the scene and to expect delays on alternate routes through the Carson Valley. Troopers said additional information about the crash will be released after the highway fully reopens.
Officials asked drivers to follow posted detours and keep an eye on local traffic reports and official social media accounts for updated closure and reopening times, per Nevada State Police.
