Friday turned deadly on Kuykendahl Road in north Harris County when a pickup plowed into the back of a stopped truck and trailer, killing the pickup’s driver, according to deputies. SkyEye13 helicopter footage showed the pickup’s bumper and hood peeled back and a white liquid spread across the pavement as law enforcement shut down the roadway for hours.
What happened
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies told ABC13 Houston that the truck pulling a trailer was stopped in a travel lane, waiting to turn into a construction site, when the pickup slammed into it from behind. First responders pulled the pickup driver from the wreckage and rushed him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the outlet reported.
SkyEye13 images also showed the battered pickup sitting behind an 18-wheeler hauling cargo at the scene as investigators documented the damage.
Kuykendahl's crash history
Kuykendahl Road has seen more than its share of heartbreak lately. The corridor has been the site of several recent deadly wrecks and ongoing safety complaints in north Harris County, including a pedestrian who was killed earlier this spring, Chaos On Kuykendahl reported. That report cites state crash data showing hundreds of traffic deaths in Harris County in recent years, highlighting the risks on fast suburban thoroughfares like Kuykendahl.
In serious crashes, local deputies frequently shut down stretches of the road while specialized teams reconstruct what happened.
What investigators say
Investigators told ABC13 the big rig had its flashers and protective lights on at the time of impact. They said it was still unclear whether the pickup driver had been distracted or suffered some kind of medical emergency before the collision.
Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved, and the official cause of the crash remains under investigation. Crews eventually cleared the wreckage after investigators finished collecting evidence at the scene.
How to help
Investigators are asking for an extra set of eyes. Anyone who saw the crash or has dash-cam footage is urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office information line at (346) 286-1600 or the Vehicular Crimes Division at 713-274-7400. Officials say further updates and any formal statements will come from the Sheriff’s Office and local news outlets as the investigation continues.
