Before dawn on Saturday, a violent crash on West Martin Street in downtown Raleigh left one person dead and briefly shut down a key stretch of the city’s Warehouse District.
Police and emergency crews swarmed the block between Harrington and Dawson streets, closing off the road while investigators documented the scene and workers cleared the wreckage.
According to WRAL, officers were called out around 3:30 a.m. after a vehicle slammed into a tree in the 300 block of West Martin Street. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police told WRAL that no other vehicles were involved and that the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit stayed on site while the street remained shut down.
Where it happened
The closure hit a busy chunk of West Martin that cuts through the Warehouse District and past Raleigh’s Union Station, a transit and business hub that can easily become a choke point when traffic is diverted. ABC11 has noted that Union Station effectively anchors the block, which means even a single closure can ripple into the morning commute. City crews reopened the roadway once investigators wrapped up and the vehicle was towed away.
A troubling pattern
This latest fatal crash comes on the heels of several deadly wrecks around Raleigh in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a motorcyclist was killed on Glenwood Avenue, as reported by WRAL. Police say the investigation into the West Martin Street collision is still active and are asking anyone with information to contact the department.
