Detroit woke up to a sticky start this morning with mostly clear skies, a muggy 73°F, and humidity in the low 70s. That was only the warmup. Highs are expected to surge into the low 90s, near 94°F, with heat index values climbing to around 100 to 103°F this afternoon. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. for parts of southeast Michigan, including Wayne County. Morning showers and thunderstorms are expected to sweep through before mid-morning, with a stronger line of storms possible late tonight into early tomorrow.
This Afternoon
Once the morning rain exits, most of the day turns into a hot, humid, mostly sunny grind, with a southwest breeze around 12 mph and gusts near 18 mph. According to NWS Detroit, urban heat will help push heat index readings into the upper 90s to around 100 in the city. Residents are urged to avoid long stretches of outdoor exertion and to drink plenty of fluids.
Late Tonight
A strong cold front could drive a squall line across southeast Michigan between roughly 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. If it holds together, the storms may pack damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and a small risk of brief, isolated tornadoes. Officials recommend securing outdoor furniture, charging phones, and having a nearby safe place to shelter if warnings are issued. Travel late tonight could turn hazardous in a hurry as sudden heavy rain and gusty winds move through.
Where To Cool Off
Cooling centers are open during heat events, with the city keeping an updated list of staffed locations and hours for residents looking for air-conditioned space. For the latest information, call the Detroit Health Department at (313) 876-4000 or visit the city's cooling-center page: City of Detroit.
Friday Outlook
The front is expected to clear the area early tomorrow, ushering in drier air and highs near 84°F with breezy west winds. Cooler, less humid conditions are on tap for the weekend.
