The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says it is tracking plans for a large "car meetup afterparty" advertised for Saturday night in downtown Jacksonville, with an Instagram flyer calling for a gathering at 331 E. Bay Street. The post uses an AI-generated image that appears to show cars racing, and that artwork has nearby residents and businesses bracing for traffic jams, late-night noise and the possibility of reckless driving.

JSO Plans To Keep Watch As Promoters Call It A Car Show

In a statement to News4JAX, a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the agency is aware of the Instagram-promoted meetup and will monitor the area if the event materializes, adding that officers "will take enforcement action when violations of municipal ordinance or state statute are reported and/or observed."

Dallas Brown, who identified himself as one of the promoters, told reporters the flyer is being misinterpreted and that the event is meant to be a stationary car show, with participants parked and displaying their vehicles, "just basically parked cars...show your ride," according to the reporting. Downtown residents Jay Wiley and Justice Evans told reporters they are concerned the crowd could shift from car show to chaos if tempers flare, cars start chasing one another or nearby property is damaged.

The Law On Racing And Reckless Driving

Florida law explicitly outlaws street racing, coordinated street takeovers and stunt driving on public roads, with key rules and definitions spelled out in Section 316.191 on racing and Section 316.192 on reckless driving. Under the Florida Statutes, penalties can include arrest, fines and driver's-license suspensions, and in aggravated or repeat cases can escalate to felony charges and longer-term suspensions.

Social Media Has Powered Past Takeovers Too

Law enforcement across Northeast Florida has been dealing with a run of social-media-organized gatherings that swell into disruptive crowds. Hoodline previously reported on a takeover that drew roughly 700 juveniles to the Southbank and forced a significant response from JSO. Episodes like that help explain why downtown residents and businesses are watching this weekend's late-night plans so closely.

What Locals Are Urged To Do

Organizers say they have been in contact with law enforcement and do not anticipate violence, but JSO is asking anyone who witnesses dangerous driving, street racing or similar violations to call 911 or the non-emergency line at 904-630-0500. News4JAX reports that the city has been asked whether a special-events permit was issued for the gathering and that officials have not yet responded.
