Downtown Los Angeles rolled into Monday under a gray, low lid of clouds and patchy fog, waking up in the low 60s with a sticky, almost tropical feel. The marine layer is set to retreat inland by late morning, trading that gloom for sunshine and sending afternoon highs into the mid to upper 70s. By later in the day, a south-southwest breeze will kick in, leaving coastal spots noticeably windier than most inland neighborhoods.
Morning Gloom, Afternoon Glow
Along the coast and into nearby valleys, expect clouds and fog to hang around through the morning before thinning out. Downtown and much of the basin should top out around 76 to 78°F by mid-afternoon once the sun wins the daily tug-of-war. Offshore, a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the outer waters through 9 a.m., and forecasters say advisory-level winds and seas may return by midweek, with a chance of gale-force gusts Wednesday night into Thursday, according to NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard.
Heads Up For Boaters
Mariners can expect choppy seas and gusty southerly winds today. If you are planning to head beyond the break, file a float plan, think twice if you are unsure about conditions, and check the latest forecast before departure. Smaller boats should steer clear of unprotected waters while advisories are up, and anyone with trips planned later this week will want to keep a close eye on updates. Local harbormasters and marinas are expected to post notices if conditions take a turn.
Sea Breezes Push Inland
Stronger than normal onshore pressure gradients will shove gusty sea breezes into the valleys and some mountain passes each afternoon, with the Antelope Valley favored for the strongest gusts. If you have lightweight patio umbrellas, pop-up tents, or other easily tipped gear, secure it before the afternoon winds arrive. Temperatures are expected to run a few degrees above seasonal norms through midweek, with a modest cooldown possible over the weekend as onshore flow strengthens.
What to pack: a light jacket for cool, gray beach mornings, sunscreen for the sunnier inland afternoons, and extra caution on the water while marine advisories are active. Any new advisories or wind bulletins later this week will be worth watching if your plans involve time on the ocean.
