A man was killed Wednesday night after a train hit him near downtown San Antonio, in what police are calling a deadly incident on the rails. The collision happened around 10 p.m. on East LaChapelle near South Flores Street, where officers say they found the man sitting on the railroad tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and San Antonio police have opened an investigation into what led up to the crash.
Photos from the scene, credited to SBG San Antonio, show investigators working along the tracks as crews documented evidence late into the night, with detectives remaining on-site for hours, according to KABB.
Tragically familiar pattern near the tracks
The deadly downtown-area collision is part of a grim pattern for San Antonio this year. KSAT reported a February rail death near West Martin Street, and the San Antonio Express-News documented a separate fatality in January on the city’s West Side. Rail-safety advocates stress that these incidents are part of a national problem: Operation Lifesaver notes that a person or vehicle is struck by a train about every three hours in the United States, and that trespassing on tracks remains a leading factor in such deaths.
What officials say and safety reminders
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name and have shared few other details while detectives continue their work, KABB reports. Safety groups and local officials continue to remind the public that rail right-of-way is private property and that trains cannot stop quickly, even when crews spot someone ahead. They urge residents to cross only at marked crossings and to stay completely off the tracks. The investigation remains active, and police say more information will be released as it becomes available.
