An e-bicyclist was pronounced at the hospital Friday evening after a crash on eastbound I-70 near Steele Street, a busy stretch of Denver interstate that quickly turned into a traffic headache as several lanes were shut down for the investigation.
Police Update and Ongoing Investigation
According to the Denver Police Department, the collision involved a motorist and an e-bicycle in the area of eastbound I-70 and Steele Street. One person was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Officers said the crash remains under investigation and urged drivers to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes while the scene was processed.
Traffic Snarled on a Key Corridor
Steele Street lines up with Exit 276A on I-70, inside the Central 70 corridor, where construction and frequent lane changes already put drivers on edge. The Colorado Department of Transportation has long managed lane shifts and closures in this section, so shutting down eastbound lanes can quickly spill congestion onto nearby streets and drag out evening commutes.
Part of a Wider Traffic Safety Crisis
Denver recorded 93 traffic fatalities in 2025, a surge that has piled pressure on city leaders to speed up road safety efforts. Reporting from the Denver Gazette shows officials are considering expanded automated enforcement and other Vision Zero strategies in response to each deadly crash on city streets.
Police have not released the rider's name. Investigators are still working to piece together how the crash unfolded and have not announced any charges or additional details. This story will be updated as authorities provide more information.
