The grills are still sizzling for now on 57th Avenue in Elmhurst, but not for much longer. White Castle says its longtime Queens outpost, a neighborhood fixture since 1939, is gearing up to close after 87 years as the company moves to sell the property near Queens Center Mall. Staff at the restaurant have been told they will be offered other jobs with the company once a final closing date is set.
Rising Land Values Tip The Scales
In a statement to Spectrum News NY1, Jamie Richardson, White Castle’s chief marketing officer, said the land under the Elmhurst slider stop has become too valuable to ignore. The property is being sold "because its value has increased substantially" in recent years, he explained, adding that White Castle plans to reinvest the proceeds back into the business. Richardson also said team members at the Elmhurst shop will be offered new roles within White Castle once a closing date is locked in. According to NY1, the restaurant opened in 1939 and ranks among the chain’s longest-running New York City locations.
Queens Boulevard Squeeze On Old-School Storefronts
The decision is playing out against a broader real-estate surge along Queens Boulevard and similar corridors. A 2025 mixed-use and retail report from Matthews found a jump in transactions and higher price-per-square-foot averages across the borough. That kind of activity has nudged more property owners to cash out rather than keep running relatively low-margin retail operations on increasingly pricey land.
Last Call For Late-Night Sliders
The Queens Chronicle reports the Elmhurst White Castle is expected to serve its final sliders on Wednesday. The restaurant is still listed on White Castle’s location page near Queens Center Mall, where for decades it has been a go-to spot for late-night runs and quick grab-and-go orders.
White Castle has stressed that the sale is part of a larger strategy to redeploy capital while keeping workers on the payroll, a point the company underscored to Spectrum News NY1. For Elmhurst, the loss of this nearly nine-decade-old outpost is another sign of how climbing land values are reshaping familiar storefronts along Queens Boulevard and beyond. Hoodline will update this story if White Castle or local officials release a confirmed closing date or details about the buyer.
