A fatal shooting on Friday afternoon brought traffic around Towson Circle to a grinding halt and prompted a heavy Baltimore County police response. The gunfire erupted near the busy roundabout where York Road meets Joppa Road and left at least one person dead, authorities said.

SKY 11 aerial footage showed officers rushing into the circle as crime-scene tape cut across multiple lanes. Preliminary reports suggest the violence may have grown out of a road-rage confrontation around 3:21 p.m. Police were seen collecting witness statements and pulling surveillance video from nearby cameras. Road closures during the investigation stretched across Dulaney Valley Road and key portions of York Road, with southbound lanes closed from Allegany Avenue to the circle and northbound lanes shut from Chesapeake Avenue to the circle, as reported by WBAL NewsRadio.

Scene and road closures

County crews kept the area locked down for several hours while investigators documented the scene. They photographed the roadway, marked evidence, and reviewed video from nearby businesses and traffic cameras.

Sky footage showed officers both on the street and atop a nearby parking deck as they scanned the area below, working to piece together what happened in the middle of the typically congested circle.

Towson’s recent safety concerns

The deadly shooting lands on a community already on edge over recent public-safety scares in and around Towson. Over the spring, residents have watched a series of high-profile incidents unfold, including an armed carjacking in late April that ended with arrests, as reported by The Baltimore Banner.

Earlier in May, a predawn carjacking in a nearby apartment area rattled neighbors and added to a sense that serious crime is hitting closer to home.

Investigation ongoing

Baltimore County police continued to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage at the scene and had not released any suspect information or charges as of Friday afternoon, authorities said, according to WBAL NewsRadio.

The investigation remains active, and officials said they plan to release additional details as they become available.
