Three Las Vegas residents who had previously been deported to Mexico were back in federal court Tuesday, this time facing allegations tied to drug distribution and an illegal reentry count. All three men remain in federal or immigration custody while their criminal and immigration cases move forward. Federal filings identify each defendant by name and lay out earlier deportations and prior state convictions that are now part of the record.
Who’s charged
Rodolfo Campillo‑Castro, Carlos Lopez‑Orozco and Hugo Astorga‑Nunez are all named in federal court papers and are accused of drug distribution related offenses in addition to being charged as deported aliens found in the United States, according to the Las Vegas Sun. The Sun reports the three men made their first appearances Tuesday, with preliminary hearings set for June 16. Prosecutors say two of the defendants were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after state or local arrests, while a third was taken into custody during ICE operations in May.
Criminal records and possible penalties
Federal prosecutors describe differing criminal histories and exposure under federal law. Two of the defendants face deported alien charges that in many cases carry a maximum statutory sentence of up to two years in prison for that offense. A third man, with multiple prior felony drug convictions, faces significantly higher possible penalties, including potential sentences of up to 20 years on certain counts, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office release. The same release notes that the cases also carry possible fines, special assessments and varying supervised release terms. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecutions, and investigators with ICE’s Salt Lake City–Las Vegas sub‑office participated in the arrests.
Part of a wider enforcement push
Federal officials have linked these filings to "Operation Take Back America," a Justice Department initiative focused on disrupting cartels and transnational criminal organizations. In recent months, local coverage has documented a steady run of similar illegal reentry and drug prosecutions. a string of similar illegal reentry cases and other reports show how many of these matters start with state arrests, followed by federal handoffs to ICE. Prosecutors say the coordinated strategy pairs ICE fugitive operations with U.S. Attorney resources to prioritize cases involving noncitizens with serious criminal records.
How the arrests unfolded
Court filings cited by the Las Vegas Sun say Hugo Astorga‑Nunez was taken into custody during Las Vegas ICE operations on May 19. The Sun reports that Carlos Lopez‑Orozco was arrested in North Las Vegas in 2024 and remanded to ICE custody on May 21, while Rodolfo Campillo‑Castro was arrested in August 2025 and remanded to ICE custody on May 29. The filings spell out earlier deportations for each defendant, including one removal dating back to 2009 and later deportations for the others, along with previous state prison terms tied to drug convictions.
What’s next
All three men are scheduled for preliminary hearings on June 16, at which point federal prosecutors will decide whether to seek indictments as the cases move through the District of Nevada docket, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office release. The Justice Department stresses that a criminal complaint is only an allegation and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court. Court records are expected to be updated as hearings occur and additional filings are made public.
