Five Las Vegas men pleaded guilty this week in federal court after prosecutors said they distributed thousands of violent and sadistic images and videos of child sexual abuse across peer-to-peer networks and other online platforms. The admissions, entered on June 1 and June 5, involve files authorities described as depicting infants, toddlers and prepubescent children. Investigators said the cases were brought under Project Safe Childhood, the federal program that coordinates local and federal efforts to combat online child exploitation.

Who pleaded guilty and what prosecutors say

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Nevada, Andrew Padilla pleaded guilty on June 1 to making available more than 4,000 images and videos and admitted possessing about 160 such files. Jimmy Franklin Dearman pleaded guilty the same day to making roughly 239 files available and possessing more than 1,600 images and 242 videos.

James Donovan, Randall William Rushton and Travis Ehlers entered guilty pleas on June 5. Donovan admitted distributing material via Discord and moving files to an Amazon cloud account and acknowledged possessing about 70 printed images and over 50,000 digital files. Prosecutors said Rushton admitted making over 600 files available and possessing more than 11,000. Ehlers admitted making more than 500 files available and possessing roughly 13,420 images and 1,784 videos.

Each defendant pleaded to at least one count of distribution and one count of possession. Donovan also admitted to transportation. Prosecutors say the statutory maximum penalties are 20 years for distribution, 20 years for possession and an additional 20 years for transportation where it is charged.

Investigations and an FBI statement

“The relentless pursuit of child sex predators is one of the FBI's top priorities,” Special Agent in Charge Christopher S. Delzotto said in the announcement, which notes the FBI’s Las Vegas Field Office investigated the cases. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah and Special Agent Delzotto made the announcement, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Afroza Yeasmin is prosecuting the cases, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

What’s next

None of the five men had been sentenced as of the announcement, and federal judges will set sentencing dates after reviewing the pleas and presentence reports. Local reporting from News 3 Las Vegas notes the pleas came in separate hearings earlier this week and that prosecutors described the files as especially graphic and violent. The cases will move forward in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas under Project Safe Childhood, which marshals federal, state and local resources to track down online child-exploitation networks.
