A routine evening shift at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital ended in tragedy last Thursday when a security guard’s vehicle went into a pond on the Grand Blanc Township campus shortly before 6:30 p.m. Bystanders and emergency crews pulled the man from roughly 10 feet of water and took him to the hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead despite life-saving measures.
According to WHMI, responders arrived to find a car submerged in about 10 feet of water while three Grand Blanc Township police officers, three firefighters and two citizens were already in the pond working to free the driver. The man was pulled from the vehicle in cardiac arrest and identified as 51-year-old Jeffrey Johnson of Flint, who was employed by Teachout Security and was on duty at the time. Investigators told the outlet that Johnson may have suffered a medical emergency before the vehicle entered the water.
Where it happened
The pond sits on the Genesys campus at One Genesys Parkway, home to Henry Ford Genesys Hospital and its 24-hour emergency department. Henry Ford Genesys Hospital describes the Grand Blanc campus as a regional center for specialty and emergency care, and hospital staff treated Johnson after he was pulled from the water.
Employer and investigation
Johnson’s employer, Teachout Security, maintains a regional presence with a Flint office and provides contract security services across Southeast Michigan, according to its website. Teachout Security outlines that regional footprint. Grand Blanc Township police said the Genesee County and Oakland County sheriff’s offices also assisted on scene, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash. WHMI reported the incident remains under investigation.
