A late-night collision on Milwaukee’s south side left a 47-year-old driver dead early Sunday, and police say a 24-year-old was taken into custody at the scene. The crash happened around 1:15 a.m. in the 1100 block of W. Greenfield Avenue. First responders treated the victim for life-threatening injuries, but the person was pronounced dead on site. According to authorities, the driver of the striking vehicle is suspected of impairment as detectives continue their investigation.
In a press release shared via Urban Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Police Department said the crash occurred Sunday, June 21, 2026, when a vehicle crossed the roadway and hit another vehicle traveling along the 1100 block of W. Greenfield Ave. The release identifies the victim as a 47-year-old who died from life-threatening injuries at the scene and confirms that a 24-year-old suspect was arrested there. Police said the striking driver is suspected of being impaired and that “charges will be referred to the Milwaukee District Attorney’s Office for review.”
Possible charges under state law
Whether prosecutors file criminal charges will hinge on investigative results, including toxicology reports and crash reconstruction findings. Under Wisconsin law, causing a death while operating a vehicle under the influence can be prosecuted as homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle (Wis. Stat. § 940.09), a felony offense. As Justia explains, the statute applies when a driver causes another person’s death while under the influence of an intoxicant or with a prohibited alcohol concentration.
Investigation and next steps
Milwaukee police say the investigation is ongoing and that the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office will review any potential charges before they are filed. The department has not released the names of either the victim or the arrested driver and says additional details will be made public as the investigation and prosecutorial review move forward.
