Maple Heights is gearing up for what officials say could be the busiest year in the police department’s history, as calls keep pouring in and construction projects start choking key routes through the city. Chief Todd Hansen and other city leaders say a late-spring jump in incidents, layered on top of multiple road projects, has officers bouncing between traffic tie-ups, nightlife-related calls, and crash scenes. Residents are being told to expect more detours, more visible police activity, and slower trips across town as summer unfolds.
The department is handling roughly 115 calls for service per day and has logged nearly 17,000 calls so far this year, with May already standing as its single busiest month, according to Cleveland.com. Hansen told the outlet that an active nightlife scene, including establishments in neighboring Bedford, along with a run of traffic incidents, is driving the spike. He did not sugarcoat his warning to residents, saying the situation “is going to be a pain in the butt,” and city leaders note that this summer’s workload is already outpacing what they usually see.
Lee Road bridge work will force detours and full closures
The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works reports that rehabilitation of the Lee Road bridge will require intermittent full closures so crews can complete a monolithic deck pour. During those shutdowns, a 4.2-mile detour will send drivers to Libby and Broadway while work is underway. The county notes that construction activity began in winter 2025 and that the rehabilitation covers both deck replacement and substructure work, a broader scope that can stretch timelines and complicate traffic control. That planned rerouting will tighten already busy corridors where officers are responding to heavy call volume.
Libby Road restorations already changing traffic patterns
The City of Maple Heights is finishing targeted work on Libby Road to wrap up water-main replacement and repave sections dug up during last year’s utility projects. Short-term lane closures and detours are already posted. A special construction notice from the city details westbound closures and detours that redirect drivers onto Lee Road and nearby residential streets. For dispatchers and patrol officers, those shifts are showing up as added congestion and more calls related to fender benders and stranded motorists who get caught in the shuffle.
Nightlife and neighboring businesses add to the call load
Hansen told Cleveland.com that busy weekend nightlife, plus businesses just over the border in Bedford, is feeding an uptick in disturbances, fights, and DUI-related crashes. With call counts climbing at the same time road work is interrupting traffic, the department is weighing staffing and overtime to keep up while still answering everyday service calls. City officials say they are working with county crews in an effort to limit overlapping closures where they can, but they are also blunt that the summer is likely to feel chaotic.
What residents should expect and where to get updates
Drivers are being urged to budget extra travel time, follow posted detours, and keep an eye on municipal project pages for changes. City construction notices and weekly reports outline short-term closures and list contact information for questions. The Maple Heights site hosts calls-for-service updates along with construction notices so residents can track road closures and non-emergency police information. Officials are asking anyone who spots hazards or dangerous driving to call the police non-emergency line so responders can prioritize and address problems quickly.
