Late afternoon ballgames at Akron's Lane Field turned chaotic on June 4 when shots rang out around 4:42 p.m., leaving neighbors on edge and detectives scrambling to track down whoever pulled the trigger. Officers recovered multiple shell casings at the scene and say surveillance video shows several juveniles holding guns during the incident. As people fled, a juvenile female was hit by a vehicle and taken to Akron Children's Hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
According to a detailed Facebook update from the Akron Police Department, detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Team followed the trail to the 300 block of Keifer Court, where they served a search warrant and seized two firearms investigators believe were used in the Lane Field shooting. Officers also found and arrested two juveniles, who were taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. A 15-year-old boy was charged with improperly discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and carrying concealed weapons, while a 16-year-old boy was charged with carrying concealed weapons. The case is logged as report number 26-65730, according to the department.
Legal Penalties For School-Zone Shootings
On the books, Ohio treats guns near schools as serious business. Firing a weapon in a school safety zone or within 1,000 feet of school property is covered by Ohio Revised Code §2923.161, which can be charged as a second-degree felony. Carrying concealed weapons falls under Ohio Revised Code §2923.12, with penalties that depend on the type of weapon, the circumstances, and the defendant's prior record.
Prosecutors decide whether juvenile suspects stay in juvenile court or are transferred to adult court, a call that typically turns on the severity of the allegations and any prior history.
Lane Field's Recent Safety Concerns
Lane Field has already been on edge this season. The park was the scene of another shooting that left a 7-year-old hospitalized, turning what should be routine trips to the field into a source of anxiety for families. Local leaders have pushed for tougher security and more regular patrols after parents reported that kids and families at youth games were being put in harm's way.
That earlier shooting sparked renewed demands for cameras and a more visible police presence during youth events, as reported by News 5 Cleveland.
Police Request Tips As Investigation Continues
Akron police are asking anyone with information on the Lane Field incident to review the department's post for contact details and reach out to detectives with tips. Because the suspects are juveniles, their names have not been released. Additional charging decisions will be made by investigators and the Summit County Prosecutor's Office.
Police say the case remains very much active, with investigators still combing through surveillance footage and tracking leads, and that updates will be shared as appropriate.
