Gunshots rang out on Jacksonville’s Southside Sunday evening, drawing a heavy police response to the 2900 block of East Kline Road as the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated an officer-involved shooting. Neighbors say they heard multiple rounds just after 6 p.m., then watched as patrol cars and crime-scene tape quickly sealed off the street. Officials have not released any information about possible injuries, the people involved, or what triggered the incident.
What we know so far
According to News4JAX, the station got a tip from a viewer who reported hearing gunfire and sent a crew to East Kline Road. News4JAX reports that JSO then issued a media notification confirming it was investigating an officer-involved shooting in that area. So far, the department has not said whether anyone was wounded or if any arrests have been made.
How the review works
Per the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office public OIS tracker, officer-involved shootings in Jacksonville are first reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office, then go through an internal administrative process to determine whether department policy was followed. JSO’s Response-to-Resistance (RTR) Review Board and Internal Affairs can recommend additional training or administrative action after the State Attorney’s legal review. The agency also publishes critical-incident briefings and, when appropriate, releases body-worn camera or surveillance video as the investigation allows.
Neighbors' accounts from the scene
Neighbors who spoke with News4JAX said they “heard the shots” and saw crews arrive shortly afterward. Several residents told reporters they were just a couple of houses away when the gunfire started, and some said they captured footage that investigators may review. Officers remained on East Kline Road into the evening while evidence-collection teams worked the scene.
What happens next
The sheriff’s office and the State Attorney’s Office will carry out parallel reviews before releasing more findings, in line with the process described on the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office open-data tracker. Depending on the outcome of those reviews, JSO may hold a community briefing and could release body-worn camera footage when it is deemed appropriate. Any charging decisions would come from the State Attorney’s Office after its review.
Updates
This is a developing story, and officials say more information will be released as it becomes available. This report will be updated when the sheriff’s office or prosecutors provide new details.
