A burst of gunfire on San Antonio’s Northeast Side Monday evening left a 40-year-old man in critical condition and four juveniles detained, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. One of the juveniles was also shot and taken to a hospital, and investigators say they believe the adult wounded that juvenile in self-defense.

Deputies were called around 8 p.m. to the 7500 block of Glen Briar Drive, where they found the man suffering from two gunshot wounds to the chest, KSAT reported. Witnesses at the scene told investigators they heard roughly three to four shots. Deputies recovered multiple firearms from the home, and officials said the juveniles could face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which can be treated as a first-degree felony.

BCSO's account

The sheriff’s office said the 40-year-old man was shot twice in the chest and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. One juvenile was also hit by gunfire and hospitalized. Four juveniles were detained at or near the location as investigators worked to sort out what happened and who may face charges.

BCSO said it believes the adult who was shot fired at the wounded juvenile in self-defense. Officials have not publicly identified the man or the juveniles.

Witnesses and scene

Neighbors reported hearing three to four gunshots, according to KSAT. Deputies collected firearms from the residence while detectives processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. Authorities said additional details were not immediately available as the investigation remained active Monday night.

What the law says

Under Texas Penal Code §22.02, an assault that involves a deadly weapon can be prosecuted as aggravated assault and may carry felony penalties. Certain shootings can be enhanced to a first-degree felony, which in Texas is punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison, plus possible fines.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office said they are continuing to follow leads and that the probe is ongoing. As of Monday night, officials had not announced any formal charges in the case.
