A 24-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday night outside a home in Northeast Philadelphia’s Mayfair neighborhood in what police are calling an ambush. Neighbors reported hearing a barrage of gunfire and then seeing a vehicle tear away from the block. Investigators say the attackers were lying in wait for the victim before opening fire. The man was rushed to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before midnight.
Officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Gilham Street around 11 p.m., according to FOX 29 Philadelphia. Police found the victim on the front lawn with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and torso and rushed him to Jefferson-Torresdale, where he died a short time later. Investigators said at least three suspects were involved, and that they took off in a dark-colored vehicle that had been parked behind the property.
Detectives say the shooters waited roughly half an hour in that vehicle before springing the ambush, and that surveillance footage shows two people firing from the sidewalk while a third moved onto the lawn. “The shooters walked right up to this victim as he was going up the steps and fired multiple shots,” Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters, as reported by FOX 29 Philadelphia.
Police response and how to tip
Philadelphia police say detectives are reviewing the surveillance footage and, so far, have made no arrests. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 in an emergency or to submit a tip through the Philadelphia Police Department tip portal so investigators can follow up.
Mayfair's recent violence and surveillance role
Mayfair has been hit by several shootings in recent years, and investigators have repeatedly leaned on private surveillance video to track suspects and piece together timelines. In an earlier Gilham Street case, authorities said video captured a confrontation leading up to the gunfire, according to 6abc.
Police have not yet released the victim’s name. The investigation remains active, and detectives continue to ask anyone with information to contact authorities. This story will be updated as police release additional details.
