A weekend outing at Trestle Park in Heath Township ended in tragedy last Saturday when one juvenile male drowned after getting into trouble in the water with his brother. A bystander pulled one boy from the water, and deputies and emergency crews later located and recovered the other child's body at the scene, officials said.
According to the Holland Sentinel, an Allegan County Sheriff’s Office release says a bystander heard two juvenile males struggling to stay afloat, pulled one from the water, and that deputies subsequently recovered the other child. The paper reports the incident took place on Saturday and that investigators are continuing to look into the circumstances.
What Officials Say
In a release cited by local media, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched after a 911 call reporting two juveniles in the water at Trestle Park and that the office is continuing its investigation. Officials have not released the victims’ names or ages and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as investigators work.
Why Water Safety Matters
Drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional injury death for children in the United States, and public health experts stress constant, attentive supervision around open water and formal swim lessons for young swimmers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that drowning is a top cause of death for young children and recommends layered prevention measures such as life jackets, barriers, and trained adult supervision.
Community Reaction
Neighbors and park users told the Holland Sentinel they were shaken by the weekend tragedy, and local officials have not announced any immediate changes to park operations. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is active and that it will release more information when available.
