A quiet stretch of Highview Road in Sellersville turned into a disaster scene Monday, when a home in Bucks County was reduced to rubble in an apparent explosion, scattering debris across the property and into neighboring yards. Aerial images showed what was left of the structure crumpled in on itself, with chunks of the house lodged in trees and strewn across nearby lawns as stunned residents gathered outside.
CBS News Philadelphia reported that Chopper 3 flew over the scene and captured video of the leveled home and widespread debris field. The brief segment noted that, at the time of airing, officials had not released information on possible casualties or an official cause of the blast.
Sellersville is a borough in northern Bucks County, about 30 miles north of Philadelphia, according to the borough's website. The explosion was reported along a residential stretch of Highview Road within the borough limits.
Investigators Likely to Zero In on Gas Lines and Tanks
Investigations into residential explosions typically focus on natural gas service lines, propane tanks and other possible ignition sources, with on-site work often involving pressure testing and detailed lab analysis of pipe segments. In a recent home explosion case, the National Transportation Safety Board outlined how investigators directed pressure testing of gas mains and service lines as part of their on-scene work, the NTSB reports. Separate reporting from the Associated Press has found that privately owned propane systems have been implicated in earlier Pennsylvania house explosions, underscoring the range of fuel systems investigators may scrutinize after a blast.
As of the CBS report, local authorities had not yet provided a detailed public statement on injuries or on what might have triggered the explosion, according to the station. Utility safety guidance advises that anyone who smells gas or suspects a leak should leave the area immediately and call 911 and their gas utility from a safe location.
