Houston police are searching for a driver who took off after fatally striking an elderly man on Airline Drive late Wednesday, leaving the victim's wife to watch the aftermath on the roadside. The collision, reported just before 11 p.m., killed the man at the scene. Investigators say the vehicle that hit him was a silver or white SUV or pickup that may now be missing its driver's-side mirror.
What police say
According to KHOU, officers were called to the north Houston stretch of Airline Drive just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. They found the man with fatal injuries after he was hit while walking with his wife. Police told the station the driver did not stop, and investigators say they still do not know whether impairment played a role. Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
How to help
Detectives are especially interested in any dash-cam or surveillance footage that might have captured the crash or the suspect vehicle. The Houston Police Department directory lists the Vehicular Crimes Division at 713-247-4072 and a hit-and-run line at 713-247-4065 for these types of cases. Those who prefer to stay anonymous can still call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to the city directory.
A dangerous corridor
Airline Drive and nearby frontage roads have been the backdrop for more than a few grim scenes in recent years, with multiple pedestrian incidents and hit-and-run investigations. Coverage from Click2Houston and FOX 26 has highlighted long-running frustration from residents and business owners about speeding drivers and frequent collisions along this North Houston corridor.
What the law says
The Texas Transportation Code requires drivers involved in a crash to stop and render aid. Leaving the scene of a collision that results in death is a serious crime, and prosecutors can pursue a second-degree felony charge that carries a possible sentence of two to 20 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run. Investigators told KHOU they are counting on witnesses and video evidence to help pinpoint the suspect vehicle and track down the driver.
