Gov. Kathy Hochul says real money is about to land in New Yorkers’ mailboxes and bank accounts, as STAR tax credits begin rolling out next week for homeowners and seniors statewide. The payments are timed to line up with school tax bills and the summer stretch, offering a bit of property tax relief just as those notices start to sting. Hochul also teased more details, urging residents to catch her live on social media as the rollout kicks into gear.
In a post on X, Hochul told residents, “We're putting money back in New Yorkers' pockets,” and invited them to “join me live” as the credits start to hit. The post works as a heads-up for when to start watching your mail and bank app.
How Much And Who Gets It
According to a release from Governor Kathy Hochul's office, the STAR program will send about $2.2 billion to roughly 2.83 million New Yorkers this summer and fall. Most homeowners can expect checks in the ballpark of $350 to $600, while Enhanced STAR recipients are slated to receive roughly $700 to $1,500. A regional breakdown in the release highlights Long Island, the Mid-Hudson and Western New York among the areas seeing the biggest total payouts.
When You Might See Your Check
The Tax Department timeline has checks starting to go out next week, with mailings and deposits continuing through the summer and into early fall. Areas with July school tax due dates, including New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, are generally scheduled to receive payments between late June and mid-July. Homeowners can track deliveries and enroll in direct deposit on the Tax Department STAR resource page.
What It Means Locally
The governor's release estimates New York City will receive about $158.6 million for roughly 483,000 recipients, money that could start showing up in mailboxes or bank accounts in the coming weeks. Officials are nudging eligible homeowners and seniors to double-check that they are enrolled and to consider direct deposit if they want the credit as quickly as possible, according to the governor's announcement.
If you are not sure whether you qualify or where your payment stands, you can visit the Tax Department's STAR resource page or the Homeowner Benefit Portal to check eligibility and sign up for direct deposit.
