Drivers on the East Freeway woke up to a nightmare scene early Sunday when a blue Ford SUV shot off a service road embankment and came crashing down into the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 between Waco Street and Lockwood Drive, slamming into another vehicle carrying four people. The wreck, reported around 2:17 a.m., pulled a heavy emergency response and backed up traffic along I-10 as crews tried to untangle the chaos.
Witnesses told officers the SUV was flying down the feeder road moments before it climbed the embankment and launched into the main lanes, turning a dark stretch of freeway into a live crash investigation site.
Crash Details and Injuries
According to Click2Houston, witnesses said the blue Ford lost control on the service road, went over the embankment, and then struck a second vehicle with four occupants in the main lanes. Two people from that struck vehicle were taken to the hospital and were reported in stable condition, while the SUV’s driver was transported in critical condition.
Houston police told reporters that speed appears to have played a role. Investigators said it was not immediately clear whether alcohol or drugs were factors, and they remained on scene as wreckage was cleared and the injured were checked out.
Dispatch Log Lists Call Type
The City of Houston’s active incident feed recorded an entry at about 2:17 a.m. near the Lockwood exit and labeled the call as “CRASH/MAJOR/FATALITY,” according to the City of Houston. That listing remains visible in the city’s online log and is expected to be clarified as investigators finish their work.
History at Waco and Lockwood
This stretch of the East Freeway has a grim track record. In October 2025, a multi-vehicle chain-reaction crash started when a car came off the feeder and landed in the main lanes, killing one person, according to ABC13. The repeat pattern of vehicles leaving the feeder and dropping into freeway traffic has fueled long-standing worries among drivers and first responders about the ramps and approaches around Waco and Lockwood.
Traffic and Safety Context
Houston TranStar’s live incident tracker regularly logs disruptions on the East Freeway near Lockwood and Waco, updating travelers when crashes shut down lanes or slow traffic to a crawl. When a vehicle suddenly lands in the main lanes, it creates an instant hazard that can send other drivers swerving, which is why crews often shut lanes while they get wrecked vehicles and debris out of the way.
How to Help Investigators
Houston police are asking anyone who saw the airborne SUV or recorded it on a dashcam or phone to contact the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division at 713-247-4072, per Click2Houston. Witnesses with video are urged to keep the original files and share them with detectives to help reconstruct how the SUV went from the service road to the middle of I-10.
