Matty G's Steakburgers' Houston Heights outpost at 1111 Studewood St. has gone dark, leaving a blank stretch of windows where the sports-themed burger shop opened in 2025. Neighbors and regulars started spotting the shutdown in late May, and the space now shows signs that a new tenant is lining up. The chain has not issued any public statement about the closure.
According to the Houston Chronicle, social media chatter in late May pointed to the closure, and a city certificate of occupancy filed in mid June lists “Spice in the Heights/Mediterranean Mezze Grill” as the owner or occupant of 1111 Studewood. Chronicle reporting also noted that calls to the restaurant’s listed number are not going through and that the chain’s website no longer gives Houston front-page billing.
From Soft Opening To Sudden Silence
Matty G's - a small regional chain with locations outside Texas - arrived at the Studewood address in 2025 as the brand’s first Texas location, according to Community Impact. The concept pitched itself as a sports-themed "mini Hall of Fame" and served steakburgers, lobster rolls and loaded fries, based on the menu and site for Matty G's Steakburgers. Even with a soft opening and local listings that showed it operating into late 2025, the Houston Heights location appears to have bowed out with barely a whisper.
Permits Point To A Mediterranean Mezze
The mid June certificate of occupancy naming "Spice in the Heights/Mediterranean Mezze Grill" signals that a Mediterranean concept is likely queued up to take over the space, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. The 1111 Studewood project is marketed as a mixed-use development with ground-floor retail, condominium units and a rooftop event venue, details laid out in leasing materials from JLL that help explain why restaurateurs keep circling the address.
Turnover At 1111 Studewood And In The Heights
The Studewood storefront has cycled through multiple restaurant tenants, a pattern noted in local coverage and reflected in leasing documents that describe churn as fairly typical for the block. That level of turnover mirrors the broader Heights dining landscape, where competition is tight and operators put a premium on outdoor seating, parking access and foot traffic. One earlier occupant, Studewood Cantine, was previously profiled by Studewood Cantine brings Tex-Mex fare to the Heights.
Commercial listings for Matty G's still show a Houston location at 1111 Studewood St., Suite A, even as permit records point to a new Mediterranean operator preparing to move in. This story will be updated if owners or future filings confirm a formal change of occupancy.
