SWAT officers forced their way into a hotel room in southeast Houston early Thursday and rescued a woman who police say had been held there against her will. A man inside the room was taken into custody and charged with unlawful restraint. Police identified the scene as the 13100 block of Cityscape.
In a post on X, the Houston Police Department said officers from the Southeast Division, its Patrol Support unit and SWAT responded, and that SWAT made entry to free the woman. The department’s post also says the male suspect was charged with unlawful restraint. The post did not include names or further details and is, for now, the only official account available, according to Houston Police.
How Patrol Support And SWAT Were Deployed
HPD's Patrol Support team was created to give patrol officers faster access to tactical capabilities and specialized tools on complicated or resource-heavy calls, and it often operates alongside SWAT on high-risk entries. Click2Houston reported on the unit's launch in April, noting that the team was designed to bridge the gap between patrol and specialized units. The combination of Southeast patrol, Patrol Support and SWAT matched the department's description of Thursday's response.
What Unlawful Restraint Means In Texas
Unlawful restraint is codified at Texas Penal Code §20.02 and is commonly prosecuted as a Class A misdemeanor, though it can be elevated to a felony when aggravating factors are present. Factors such as whether the victim was exposed to a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or the presence of other statutory elements can change charging and potential penalties, according to Justia. The department did not specify which level of the statute, if any, prosecutors will pursue in this case.
Detectives remained on scene as the department's post said the situation was "wrapping up" early Thursday, and investigators are expected to release booking or charge details through official channels. We'll monitor updates from Houston Police and update this report as more information becomes available.
