Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies spent part of Wednesday chasing a suspected stolen car along the eastbound 10 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley, where the driver reportedly pushed speeds to roughly 90 to 100 mph. The vehicle hugged the center divider for much of the pursuit, weaving through traffic, sideswiping other cars, and eventually drifting into the middle lanes after several miles.
According to CBS Los Angeles, deputies described the car as possibly stolen and said the driver held those high speeds along the eastbound 10. The outlet reported the vehicle was traveling around 100 mph before later slowing to about 90 mph as it moved into the center lanes. CBS Los Angeles noted that it was not immediately clear whether anyone was arrested or injured.
How pursuits are handled
State and local agencies routinely weigh the danger of continuing a chase against the risk to everyone else on the road, and they will terminate pursuits when public safety tips the scale. The California Highway Patrol’s California Highway Patrol guidelines outline when officers should initiate, continue, or break off a pursuit, as well as reporting requirements that many other departments use as a model.
San Gabriel Valley history
High-speed chases on the 10 and nearby corridors have a long track record of wrecking commutes and ending in crashes across the San Gabriel Valley. Earlier this year, as big rig smash ends DUI chase reported, a pursuit in La Puente wrapped up when a suspected impaired driver slammed into a big rig, triggering a major traffic mess.
Next steps
Authorities had released only limited information at the time of reporting, and more details are expected once the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issues an official statement or booking records. Drivers who were in the area and captured dashcam or cellphone video are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Department to help investigators piece together what happened on the freeway.
