Jacksonville rolled into Wednesday under steamy, mostly clear skies, with temperatures already in the upper 70s at local observation sites. Inland neighborhoods will roast under strong sun through the day, while Atlantic beaches hang on to slightly cooler readings.
Afternoon Heat And Gusts
Expect plenty of sun with a high near 93°F this afternoon, along with northwest winds of 6 to 10 mph and gusts up to 16 mph. Inland areas away from the coast could push into the mid 90s. With humidity piled on top, it will feel even hotter, with some inland spots seeing heat-index values near or above 100°F this afternoon. Outdoor plans are still a go, but build in breaks and shade, according to the National Weather Service.
Tonight Into Thursday
A weak frontal boundary teaming up with the east-coast sea breeze will keep isolated showers and storms in play tonight and again Thursday afternoon, mainly south of a Gainesville–St. Augustine line. Putnam, Flagler and Marion counties carry the highest odds for slow-moving storms that could kick up gusty winds to around 50 mph and drop brief, heavy rain. Most of the action should fire in the late afternoon into early evening hours. The evolving pattern first showed up in our earlier Hoodline earlier update.
Weekend Heat Risk
Ridge building over the Gulf will crank up the thermostat this weekend, sending temperatures into the upper 90s away from the coast on Saturday and Sunday. Heat-index values are likely to land in the 10408°F range, with the potential to reach 110°F Monday. That setup makes Heat Advisory conditions possible Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service. For anyone needing a break from the blast furnace, the City of Jacksonville keeps a list of designated cooling centers and activation details on its "Stay Cool Jax" page at the City of Jacksonville.
Beach And Outdoor Safety
Rip current risk should stay low through Wednesday and Thursday, but it may bump up to a moderate risk by Friday into the weekend as surf slowly increases. Boaters should watch for evening southerly gusts and small-craft exercise-caution conditions. For day-to-day plans, try to avoid strenuous activity during the mid-afternoon peak, drink plenty of water, and keep an eye on local forecasts if you have outdoor events lined up this weekend.
