A routine parking maneuver in Kalihi turned deadly after a 59-year-old man was struck in a private parking lane and later died from his injuries, authorities said.

The collision happened on May 26 when a 55-year-old driver trying to park hit the pedestrian, who was lying on the roadway inside the parking lane, according to police. The victim was taken to an area hospital in good condition but later succumbed to his injuries. The driver stayed at the scene while the Honolulu Police Department launched an investigation.

According to Hawaii News Now, the crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. in a private parking lane next to a business. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office notified police on June 4 that the pedestrian had died after initially being taken to the hospital in stable condition. As of now, the outlet reports that speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.

Why It Is Classified as a "Non-traffic" Fatality

Per the Honolulu Police Department, collisions that occur on private property, including driveways and parking lanes, are logged as "non-traffic" fatalities rather than public roadway deaths.

An earlier non-traffic death in Kalihi on Feb. 10 was recorded as Oʻahu’s first such fatality of 2026, a case detailed in local reporting on a Kalihi driveway turned deadly.

Police Say Investigation Is Ongoing

Honolulu police say the Traffic Division's Vehicular Homicide Section is investigating the case and has not announced any charges. Investigators are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to come forward as they work to piece together exactly what happened in that parking lane.

Anyone with information or video of the collision is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division at (808) 723-3413 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300. Updates will be posted to the department's traffic-media page as investigators continue their review.
