A late-night crash on West FM 1960 in the Kingwood area left a pedestrian dead after Houston police say he was struck by a pickup on Aug. 3, 2022. Emergency crews rushed the man to a nearby hospital, where he died several days later. Part of the busy roadway was shut down overnight while investigators worked the scene.
What police say
According to the Houston Police Department, the crash happened around 11:35 p.m. on Aug. 3 on West FM 1960. Investigators say a white Dodge Ram pickup hit a man who was standing in the roadway. Houston Fire Department paramedics took him to HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, where he was pronounced dead on Aug. 6.
Police say the driver of the pickup stayed at the scene, spoke with officers and was not believed to be impaired. The case is being handled by HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
Local coverage
TV station KHOU aired a video report on Aug. 8 that showed crews working the scene and relayed HPD’s initial account, including that the driver remained while investigators processed the crash. The outlet also highlighted nearby residents’ frustrations over speeding and crossing safety in the Kingwood area.
Where this fits
The deadly crash was one of many pedestrian fatalities in Houston that year. Houston’s Vision Zero annual report from the City of Houston notes that pedestrians made up about 36% of traffic deaths in 2022, with speeding and impaired driving listed among the top contributing factors. The city has responded by prioritizing safety projects along its high-injury network in an effort to reduce those numbers.
Investigation
HPD says the investigation is still active and is asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Office of Community Affairs at 713-308-3200, according to the Houston Police Department. The incident is logged under report number 103263122-L, and detectives with the Vehicular Crimes Division are continuing follow-up work.
