An early-morning attempted car theft in Long Beach turned into a close call when a suspect opened fire on a motorist who confronted him, police said. Officers were dispatched around 4:22 a.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of West 33rd Street for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, where they found evidence that a shooting had taken place. The two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, and no injuries were reported, according to investigators.
Police say victim confronted suspects
According to MyNewsLA, which cites a Long Beach Police Department statement, the preliminary investigation found that the motorist confronted two adult male suspects who were breaking into a vehicle when one of them fired a gun in the victim’s direction. The outlet reports officers located evidence that a shooting had occurred and that the pair took off in a vehicle. No one was hit, and detectives told the news site the investigation is still ongoing.
How to help and stay safe
The Long Beach Police Department says detectives are continuing to investigate and is asking anyone with information or video to submit tips through the department’s website. Authorities urge residents to call 911 for crimes in progress rather than confronting suspects themselves, since situations like this can escalate in seconds.
