A 39-year-old man walking back to his hotel in Midtown Manhattan early Tuesday wound up in the middle of a group attack that ended with his basketball jersey ripped off his back, according to police.
The victim was in front of 306 West 47 Street at about 12:17 a.m. when a group approached and surrounded him, authorities said. The assailants punched and kicked him, then forcibly pulled off his jersey and took off on foot.
NYPD Shares Images, Offers Cash Reward
In a post on X, NYPD Crime Stoppers released photos of several people it says were involved and said it is offering up to $3,500 for information leading to an arrest. The alert lists tip lines 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) and, for Spanish speakers, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782), and directs the public to the department’s Crime Stoppers portal to submit anonymous information.
Investigators said the suspects approached the victim, assaulted him about the body and then fled on foot. Officers are now banking on the publicly released images to jog memories and generate leads.
Midtown North Precinct Context and Robbery Numbers
The attack happened in the Midtown North precinct, a central Manhattan zone dense with hotels, theaters and nearly nonstop foot traffic. According to the NYPD CompStat report for the week of June 1–7, the precinct recorded 38 robberies that week, an 11.6 percent drop from 43 during the same week last year. Even so, the data show that high-traffic corridors remain common sites for robberies.
The CompStat figures indicate that year-to-date robberies in Midtown North are down overall, but isolated violent incidents like Tuesday’s still surface in the area’s hotel and transit corridors.
Recent Group Incidents Show a Pattern
The alert comes on the heels of other group-related incidents reported in Midtown. In May, the NYPD asked for help identifying people after a large group forced entry at 227 West 46th Street and fled on foot, according to Fox 5 New York.
Other recent reports detail violent encounters in Midtown’s transit and tourist corridors, including an early-May slashing near a 49th Street subway station that police investigated, according to West Side Spirit. In those cases, as in this latest robbery, investigators have leaned on bystander video and surveillance footage to help identify suspects.
How to Share Tips With Investigators
Anyone with video, photos or information about Tuesday’s robbery is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by phone or online. The NYPD lists 1-800-577-TIPS and 1-888-57-PISTA for Spanish, and directs people to its Crime Stoppers portal for anonymous submissions. Tips may be eligible for a reward and can be submitted confidentially, according to the department’s victim services page (NYPD).
If you witnessed the incident or captured it on camera, police say you should call 911 in an emergency; otherwise, contact Crime Stoppers or upload tips through the portal. Detectives note that the images released in the wanted alert could be crucial to making an arrest.
