According to WKYC, Mentor Fire Department crews arrived to find a 72-year-old bicyclist who was conscious but suffering from an open leg wound and a possible fracture. The other rider, believed to be in his 60s, was first taken to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center, then flown to the Cleveland Clinic main campus for additional care. Officials have not released the names of either cyclist, and no formal condition updates have been provided beyond those initial details.
Driver Flees To House, Barricades Inside As SWAT Moves In
Police say the driver left the crash scene and went into a nearby house on Orchard Drive, where the situation escalated into a barricade incident. In a statement to WKYC, city communications officer Ante Logarusic said authorities "are negotiating with the occupant to peacefully emerge from the home."
The Mentor Police SWAT team set up a safety perimeter around the residence while officers continued working the crash scene. Neighbors were urged to steer clear of the area as negotiators, medics, and investigators coordinated their response and tried to keep the situation from boiling over.
Crash Investigation Ongoing
Mentor police say the collision remains under active investigation. Investigators are expected to process physical evidence at the site, review any available surveillance video, and speak with witnesses. No charges have been announced in connection with the crash, and officers are asking anyone with video or information related to the incident to contact the Mentor Police Department.
