A teenager from the Houston area was found dead inside a vehicle that had become submerged in an East Texas creek, according to local authorities. Deputies and rescue crews began checking flood-prone sections of roadway after the teen was reported missing when they did not return from a Saturday visit to Houston County Lake, eventually locating and recovering the car.

According to ABC13 Houston, deputies searching along FM 229 spotted damage to a guardrail off Loop 304 and then found the vehicle's front bumper and license plate roughly 70 yards down the creek. About 30 yards farther downstream, they saw the roof of a submerged vehicle. A Texas Parks and Wildlife search-and-rescue team removed the teen's body from the car, with the Crockett Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Crockett Fire Department all assisting in the recovery, the station reported.

Who responded and what that means

The Houston County Sheriff's Office led the search effort. The county site lists Sheriff Zak Benge and provides contact information for records and public inquiries. The Crockett Police Department serves the city that is the county seat and typically handles crash investigations in the area. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department trains game wardens and maintains specialized search-and-rescue teams that step in to help local agencies with water-related recoveries.

Flood-prone stretch led deputies to the creek

Investigators told ABC13 Houston that stretches along FM 229 have been flooding regularly because of recent heavy rains. An emergency-management official who noticed the damaged guardrail off Loop 304 helped direct deputies to the spot where the vehicle ended up. Officials said runoff and standing water can sweep vehicles off the roadway and into nearby creeks and ditches during and after storms.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities have not publicly identified the teen or specified where in the Houston area they lived, and investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Crockett police and Houston County detectives say the investigation is still active and are asking anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
