Monroe's Arthur Lesow Community Center is back in business after a nearly $10 million overhaul that expanded its library footprint and refreshed meeting and recreation spaces for the Orchard East neighborhood. City officials and community partners cut the ribbon during a Monday afternoon ceremony that capped a multi-year push to bring library, education, and opportunity programs together under one roof.
According to the City of Monroe, the enlarged facility now houses the Lillian Stewart Navarre Branch Library, The Learning Bank, and the Monroe County Opportunity Center. City event details showed a 4 p.m. ribbon cutting followed by partner programming into the evening on the grand-opening date.
CBS News Detroit aired a short segment on the celebration, describing the project as a nearly $10 million renovation that created a larger library space alongside updated recreation and meeting areas. The broadcast also captured the crowd and the partners who helped push the project across the finish line.
What's Inside the New Center
The expansion, which was approved by the city council in 2024, increases the site to roughly 28,000 square feet and adds a community living room, media studios, a youth activity area, and a rooftop reading terrace, according to the city's project page. Those flexible rooms are intended to support after-school programs, workforce workshops, and expanded library events for families and seniors.
Programs, Partners and Adult Education
The Learning Bank will provide GED prep and adult-education services on-site, and Monroe County Community College reports that its Momentum Adult Success Program will operate a resource center at the Opportunity Center to assist adult learners and job seekers. Local nonprofits and county partners are lined up to offer tutoring, workforce coaching, and support services inside the shared facility, the college notes.
How the Project Was Funded
When plans were approved, the city estimated the build at about $9.3 million, with officials stating that the work combined local allocations and outside grants to cover construction and fit-out. State records also show earlier enhancement-grant awards tied to Arthur Lesow's work, reflecting a mix of municipal, county, and state funding that helped make the overhaul possible.
The Arthur Lesow Community Center is located at 120 Eastchester Street in Monroe, and local listings show contact and program information for the Opportunity Center at that address. Residents interested in partner programming or class schedules can check the center's listings and the city’s events pages for updates.
