What began as a late-night crash response on Interstate 45 north of The Woodlands turned deadly when a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy was struck and killed by a vehicle while working the scene, officials said. The deputy had been responding to a multi-vehicle wreck when a second collision occurred, and the agency has not yet released the deputy’s name.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were investigating a multi-vehicle crash on I-45 North near Lake Woodlands when one of its deputies was hit, as reported by Click2Houston. The department said the investigation is ongoing and has not provided details about the striking vehicle or any potential charges.
Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman publicly offered condolences, writing, "Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy who was tragically killed last night while working a crash scene on Interstate 45," according to FOX 26 Houston. Law enforcement agencies across the region shared messages of sympathy as first responders remained on scene.
Road closures and hazmat response
A Houston TranStar traffic alert logged the incident at I-45 northbound near Woodlands Parkway and Robinson Road as a hazmat spill affecting multiple main lanes and shoulders, per Click2Houston. Traffic was diverted while hazmat teams and tow operators worked to clear debris and spilled material from the freeway.
Investigation underway
Authorities have not said whether the driver who struck the deputy will face charges, and investigators are reconstructing the sequence of crashes and collecting evidence, according to FOX 26 Houston. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information or dash-cam video to contact the department’s non-emergency line, as listed on its website.
Why this stretch remains a concern
Interstate 45 through Montgomery County has seen recurring serious collisions in recent years, and the highway claimed a Montgomery County deputy’s life in a 2024 crash, underscoring persistent safety concerns on the busy northbound corridor, according to the Houston Chronicle. Local officials and transportation planners have long debated changes intended to reduce crashes on that stretch.
The sheriff’s office said it will provide updates as more information becomes available. We will update this story when officials release additional details.
