An afternoon shooting in the 1000 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue has left one person fighting for life, and Columbus homicide detectives are now racing to piece together what happened.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the scene around 3:12 p.m. Monday and found the victim unresponsive, according to Shore News Network. Columbus Fire medics rushed the victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation as detectives canvas the neighborhood for witnesses and any available video. Shore News Network reports that investigators have not yet identified a motive and have not publicly named any suspect.

Detectives Seek Person of Interest

Detectives say they are trying to identify a person of interest who was in the immediate area when the shots were fired and who, they warn, “may be armed,” according to a public appeal cited by Shore News Network. Police say this individual might have crucial information about the shooting. Detective Kindler is leading the case with assistance from Detective Jude, and both are asking anyone who recognizes the person to come forward.

How To Report Tips

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Kindler at 614-645-3750, the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730, or submit an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477). Those contact numbers are listed on Columbus Division of Police media releases and on the Central Ohio Crime Stoppers website. City records also show a separate felonious-assault incident in the 1000 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue in June 2025, see a Columbus Division of Police press release from that date.

Detectives say the investigation remains active and that they will update the public as more information becomes available. Anyone with footage or first-hand knowledge is asked to call investigators rather than approach anyone who may be involved.
