What started as a routine stop for gas in north Harris County ended in deadly gunfire along the North Loop on Saturday, as a Houston man now jailed on murder charges is accused of carjacking a pickup and shooting its owner.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office were called to the 11800 block of Tidwell Road around 2 p.m. for the reported carjacking. Investigators say the owner of the stolen truck, identified as Louis Erebia, used a GPS app with family members to track his blue Chevrolet Silverado to the North Loop near Airline Drive and then confronted the suspect. Erebia was shot, taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. A second man was also shot but survived.
How deputies say the deadly carjacking unfolded
According to investigators, the trouble began at a gas station when a man approached Erebia and then drove off in his blue Silverado. Family members quickly pulled up a GPS app to follow the truck's live location as it moved across north Houston.
The victim's father and a family friend eventually spotted the disabled pickup near the North Loop and Airline Drive area, where it had been involved in a crash. Two people ran from the truck toward a nearby Chevron, and the confrontation that followed ended in gunfire. HCSO Detective Sergio Torres told Click2Houston, "The male suspect had produced a firearm, discharging the firearm and the victims sustained a gunshot wound."
Victim, suspect and charges
The Harris County Sheriff's Office identified the owner as 56-year-old Louis Erebia and said he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Officials named 37-year-old London Hogan Sr. as the suspect. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and is charged with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated robbery.
The sheriff's office said its crime scene and homicide units responded to both the Tidwell Road scene and the later shooting scene, as reported by KTRK.
Investigation underway; officials ask for tips
Detectives say they have detained several people as they work to determine who was involved and are reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station. The sheriff's office is also looking for a male and female suspect who took off in a black pickup and is asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to Click2Houston.
In a separate notice, the Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed its homicide division is leading the investigation.
What happens next
Hogan remains in custody while the Harris County District Attorney's Office reviews the case and prepares charges for prosecution in county court. Authorities have not released a motive and have again urged anyone with video, information or tips to contact Crime Stoppers or the sheriff's office, as reported by KTRK.
