North Philadelphia’s 2700 block of Oakdale Street turned into a chaotic scene late Friday night, as firefighters battled a rowhome blaze that left at least two of their own being treated on the sidewalk.
Crews swarmed the narrow block, with ladder trucks stretching overhead and hoses snaking across the street as they worked to knock down the flames and check adjoining properties. Medics were seen loading at least two firefighters onto stretchers, while other companies remained on the scene well into the night.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the fire broke out around 9 p.m. on June 5, with the station’s SkyForce10 helicopter over the area by about 9:15 p.m. The outlet’s aerial footage showed firefighters receiving treatment on the block. As of that report, officials had not yet said what sparked the blaze.
Rowhome risks and recent blazes
In a city full of attached rowhouses, a single fire can quickly become everyone’s problem. Shared walls and tight spacing can help flames leap from home to home, raising the stakes for residents and first responders alike.
On May 3, a Nicetown fire ripped through several homes on a North Philly block, with a Nicetown blaze damaged several neighboring houses. In March, a separate East Germantown rowhome fire led to multiple firefighter injuries after part of the structure collapsed, according to CBS Philadelphia.
Investigation and next steps
NBC10 Philadelphia reported that officials had not yet released an official cause for the Oakdale Street fire at the time of its coverage. Typically, the city’s fire marshal leads investigations into residential fires.
The Department of Licenses & Inspections may also step in to examine damaged structures and can declare properties unsafe if needed. Residents who need an inspection can request one through the city’s eCLIPSE system or by calling 311, according to Phila.gov.
This remains a developing story. At the time of the reports, officials had not yet released information on casualties or how many residents were displaced. Updates from the Philadelphia Fire Department and city officials will be added as they become available.
