A North Philly block turned into a crime scene Thursday night when a 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg after what police say started as an argument and spiraled into violence. Officers found the teen on the 2400 block of West Cambria Street with at least one gunshot wound to his leg and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Police had not released his condition as of the initial reports.
Police: Fight Erupts Into Gunfire On West Cambria
Officers were called to the 2400 block of West Cambria Street around 7:12 p.m. on June 25 after neighbors reported the sounds of a fight followed by gunfire, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. When they arrived, police found the 16-year-old with at least one gunshot wound and took him to the hospital.
No arrests have been made. Police said the suspected shooter was wearing all-dark clothing and blue surgical gloves. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group is handling the case and working to track down the gunman.
Citywide Crime Trends Cast Long Shadow
The incident lands in the middle of a complicated moment for public safety in Philadelphia. The city recorded 222 homicides in 2025, the fewest since 1966, even as gun violence still hits neighborhoods like North Philadelphia hardest, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. City officials and community groups have said they plan to keep pushing violence-prevention efforts, arguing that lower overall numbers do not erase the daily reality in hotspots like West Cambria.
Another Teen Wounded Earlier This Year
Thursday’s shooting was not an isolated scare for North Philly families. Earlier this spring, a separate daylight attack on West Lehigh Avenue left another 16-year-old wounded and stirred neighborhood conversations about safety, according to North Philly teen shot on West Lehigh. That earlier case and the latest shooting highlight the risks teenagers face in parts of the city and the difficulty investigators encounter when witnesses are reluctant or surveillance footage is limited.
Detectives are canvassing the area around West Cambria and asking anyone with information to call 215-686-TIPS (8477). Police are also urging residents to share any surveillance or cellphone video that might help identify whoever pulled the trigger.
