A 2-year-old girl died after drowning inside a North Port home yesterday, despite frantic efforts by first responders to save her. North Port police officers and emergency medical personnel performed life-saving measures at the scene, but the child did not survive. Authorities have not released additional details, and the case remains under active investigation.
Police response
According to WINK News, the North Port Police Department was called to the home for a reported drowning. Officers and EMS personnel immediately attempted to resuscitate the toddler. The station reports that the child later died, and investigators have not yet said how the incident unfolded or what led up to the emergency call.
Drowning risk in Florida
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that, nationwide, more children ages 1 to 4 die from drowning than from any other cause, and that drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death among children. The CDC data highlight why early season vigilance around backyard pools, bathtubs and open water is considered critical, especially in warm weather states like Florida where kids are in and around water much of the year.
How families can reduce risk
The Florida Department of Health urges families to rely on multiple layers of protection such as constant adult supervision, four-sided pool fencing with locked gates, pool alarms, swim lessons and CPR training as proven ways to reduce at home drowning risk. Florida Department of Health materials spell out these recommendations and point residents to local programs that provide swim instruction and safety education.
Local prevention efforts
North Port officials say water safety is a year round priority. City materials note that the North Port Aquatic Center hosted a MayDay Drowning Prevention Expo earlier this month, aimed at getting families ready for summer around the water. City of North Port leaders point to community education and affordable swim lessons as key tools for prevention, particularly as rising temperatures send more families to backyard pools and neighborhood decks.
North Port police are asking anyone with information related to Monday’s incident to contact the department. WINK News reports it has reached out to the agency for further comment. This story will be updated as authorities release more details.
