A late-night fight at an Orange apartment complex ended in tragedy Saturday when police say a 28-year-old man came back to the scene in a car, drove into a courtyard, and hit another man, who later died at a hospital.
Officers were called around 10:28 p.m. to reports of a fight in the 600 block of South Fashion Park. By the time police arrived, the suspect had already taken off, according to investigators. A short time later, officers say the man returned in a vehicle, pulled into the courtyard in front of an apartment building, and accelerated toward another man, striking him.
Authorities took the driver into custody at the scene, and detectives are now working to piece together exactly what led up to the deadly confrontation.
What Police Say
As reported by CBS Los Angeles, police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Abrahan Perez and said he was arrested on suspicion of homicide-related charges after returning to the complex in a vehicle.
The Orange Police Department's Instagram post, embedded above, states that Perez "drove into the courtyard area in front of an apartment complex" and then "accelerated the vehicle toward another man," leaving the victim with critical injuries. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the department. Charges and Investigation
Police say Perez was arrested on suspicion of homicide-related charges and remains in custody while detectives gather evidence and interview witnesses.
CBS Los Angeles reports that investigators had not immediately released a possible motive in the case. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the investigation and decide on formal charges.
How to Help
The Orange Police Department is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators or submit tips through the department's social media channels and non-emergency lines, as noted in its Instagram post at Orange Police Department on Instagram. Detectives say they are especially interested in hearing from anyone who saw the initial fight or the moments before the vehicle entered the courtyard.
