A Friday night traffic stop on I-75 in Pasco County turned into a major DUI bust when a Florida Highway Patrol trooper reported finding 34 open alcohol containers in a San Antonio man's car and a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. The driver, 33-year-old Conor William Parady, was pulled over on northbound I-75 after speeding past a trooper and was later booked into the Pasco County Jail on a DUI charge, according to authorities.
How the stop unfolded
According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release reported by Tampa Bay 28, an FHP trooper was patrolling northbound I-75 near mile marker 280 around 10:46 p.m. when a Honda Civic blew past at more than 90 mph. During the traffic stop, troopers said the driver appeared heavily intoxicated, and a closer look inside the vehicle turned up 34 open alcohol containers. The release states that Parady's blood-alcohol concentration measured 0.177, which is more than twice Florida's 0.08 legal limit.
What the law says
Florida law bars open alcoholic containers in the passenger area of a vehicle on public roads, and that rule covers both drivers and passengers, as outlined in the Florida Statutes. The state sets its driving under the influence threshold at 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood; anything above that can lead to arrest and criminal prosecution. Penalties for DUI depend on a person's prior record and the circumstances of the case, and can include fines, license suspension and ignition interlock requirements.
Charges and next steps
Parady was booked into the Pasco County Jail on a DUI charge, according to the FHP release as reported by Tampa Bay 28. The release did not specify whether prosecutors plan to add charges related to speeding or the open containers, and those details are expected to emerge in formal court filings. Pasco County court records will show any additional charges that are filed and list upcoming hearing dates.
