A Sunday evening commute through Penn Station's NJ Transit concourse turned into a crime scene when five people were stabbed in the busy Midtown hub, sending riders scrambling and drawing a heavy emergency response. FDNY and EMS crews rushed in just after 7 p.m., and officials said one victim was in serious condition while the others suffered moderate to minor injuries.
What officials say
Paramedics arrived around 7 p.m., according to AP News, and found one person with serious injuries, two with moderate injuries and two with minor wounds. All five were taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Suspect in custody
Local television reported that Amtrak Police arrested a person at the scene. ABC7 New York said officials described the suspect as "emotionally disturbed." Investigators have not released the suspect's name or any formal charges as they canvas the concourse and comb through security video.
Transit disruption and security
Police asked people to avoid the area and warned of traffic delays and mass-transit disruptions, as CBS New York reported. The stabbings came on the eve of Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, which AP News said President Donald Trump planned to attend. That visit had already prompted an elevated law-enforcement presence around the arena.
Context and next steps
This incident follows a string of safety and infrastructure problems at Penn Station, including a March attack in which a sleeping homeless man was set on fire and a late May track and tunnel fire that disrupted service, as reported by NY1. The NYPD has referred media inquiries to Amtrak Police, according to PIX11, and investigators are asking anyone with video or information to contact authorities.
