Pinellas County has put Suncoast Center on a 90-day corrective plan after staffing gaps left overnight sexual assault exams unavailable, ordering the nonprofit to fix the problem or face potential consequences. For roughly a year, the center did not have forensic-trained nurses on duty overnight, a lapse survivors and advocates say meant time-sensitive medical care and evidence collection were put on hold until morning.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, some people who came in seeking exams overnight were told to come back later. One survivor waited more than 12 hours. In another case, an elderly patient with dementia could not be examined until daylight. The Times reported that the overnight staffing cuts happened without any public notice, and advocates called the situation unacceptable. That coverage pushed county officials to review the program and ultimately impose the formal 90-day corrective plan.
County Steps In After Reporting
Columbia Journalism Review noted that county leaders moved after the Times story drew attention to the overnight gap. The outlet reported that Suncoast adjusted its staffing in response and was then placed on a corrective plan aimed specifically at restoring reliable overnight coverage. Columbia Journalism Review said the move gives the county a defined window to track whether Suncoast follows through and ensures the issue is formally documented in the public record.
Suncoast's Role In Pinellas
On its own website, Suncoast Center describes itself as Pinellas County's certified sexual assault services provider. The nonprofit says it offers forensic evidence collection, advocacy services, and a 24/7 helpline for survivors. Suncoast says it employs specially trained forensic nurses and provides medical follow-up, legal advocacy, and counseling in the aftermath of an exam.
Survivors and advocates told reporters that hours-long waits for a forensic exam can compromise both patient care and criminal investigations. As the Tampa Bay Times reported, advocates are urging county officials to treat this as more than a quick fix and to guarantee dependable, around-the-clock access for anyone who needs an exam, regardless of the hour.
Why Timing Matters
Medical forensic exams are highly time-sensitive. Bodily fluids and trace DNA can break down or be lost, and quicker exams can increase the odds of collecting usable evidence while also allowing clinicians to offer preventive treatments as soon as possible. A peer-reviewed study on acute sexual assault care has found that long waits and the lack of dedicated sexual-assault nurse examiners remain common barriers to quality care. Research cited by the National Institutes of Health outlines the critical role that specialized examiners play and the clinical and forensic consequences that can follow when exams are delayed.
The county's corrective plan gives Suncoast 90 days to demonstrate that overnight coverage is truly restored and sustainable. Advocates say they will be watching closely to see whether the changes last. We will continue to follow county updates and Suncoast's progress as the clock runs on the corrective period.
