A massive power outage snapped the lights off for tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Placer County on Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2026, cutting electricity, darkening multiple traffic signals and triggering a spike in alarm calls across foothill communities. Deputies were patrolling affected areas and urging drivers to use extra caution at intersections.
Sheriff Deputies Fan Out As Signals Go Dark
According to a post by the Placer County Sheriff's Office on X, deputies were dealing with an increased number of alarm calls set off by the loss of power and were actively monitoring the outage. The office said the outage was affecting more than 47,000 customers across the county and warned that numerous traffic signals were out. The sheriff's post urged drivers to treat dark signals as four-way stops and said deputies would share additional updates as they came in.
Live Trackers Show Big Outage, Different Counts
Live outage trackers put the number of customers without power in Placer County at roughly 43,000 during the event, with most of the outages listed under PG&E territory, according to PowerOutage.us. That figure differs from the sheriff's estimate, a familiar split in the early hours of large outages as utility and public safety numbers update on their own schedules. For address specific restoration estimates, customers are directed to the utility's outage center at PG&E.
How Residents Are Urged To Respond
Local officials reminded residents to call 911 only for life threatening emergencies and to report non emergency outage details to their utility. The county's emergency page lists generator safety, keeping refrigerators closed to preserve food and checking on neighbors who rely on electrically powered medical devices as top priorities during outages, according to Placer County. Residents were also urged to stay well clear of any downed power lines and to rely on official channels for information about shelters or other support.
Why The Lights Go Out Here And What Utilities Are Doing
The Sierra foothills are especially vulnerable to outages caused by weather, equipment failure and planned safety de energizations. PG&E has been carrying out undergrounding and system upgrades in Placer County as part of its wildfire safety program, per PG&E. At the time of publication PG&E had not posted a detailed cause on its outage page, although crews typically prioritize hospitals, water facilities and public safety circuits when restoring service. Officials said field crews would assess damage and work to safely re energize lines as conditions allow.
Where To Get Updates And Report Outages
Residents can report outages and check estimated restoration times through live trackers and utility tools, and the county's ReadyPlacer dashboard along with the sheriff's social accounts will carry official alerts as responders work the incident. PowerOutage.us tracks county level outage totals in real time and can supplement utility estimates for a broader view. We will post updates as public safety agencies and the utility release further information.
