Two people were killed and two others were injured Friday after a multi-vehicle red-light collision at the intersection of State Road 60 and North Turkey Creek Road in Hillsborough County, troopers said. The Florida Highway Patrol reported the crash happened at about 12:50 p.m.
Florida Highway Patrol's account of the collision
State troopers say a 59-year-old Plant City woman driving a Chevy Cobalt entered the intersection on a red signal and was struck on the side by a Dodge Journey driven eastbound by a 71-year-old woman from Sebring. The impact spun the Cobalt into the northeast corner of the intersection, where it collided with a shed, and the Journey then struck a Kia K5 that had been stopped in the westbound left-turn lane. The Cobalt's driver and a 59-year-old passenger from Dover were pronounced dead at the scene, while the drivers of the Journey and the Kia suffered only minor injuries. Those details were provided by the Florida Highway Patrol and were reported by Tampa Free Press.
Where it happened and safety context
The collision occurred at the busy SR-60 and Turkey Creek intersection in Plant City, a corridor local planners have repeatedly flagged for safety upgrades. The Florida Department of Transportation's Tampa Bay district notes it repaved the SR-60 segment near Turkey Creek, according to a Florida Department of Transportation Tampa Bay district project factsheet, and Plan Hillsborough's Vision Zero Action Plan lists the SR-60 and Turkey Creek area among the county's high-crash corridors in Plan Hillsborough's analysis. Those engineering and planning records underscore long-running traffic safety concerns along this stretch of SR-60.
Investigation ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate and has not released additional identifying information, according to local reporting. Initial trooper statements were relayed to reporters, and official crash records can be requested through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' crash-report portal at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Crews briefly closed lanes while first responders cleared the wreck and reopened the intersection once the scene was secured. This report will be updated as troopers and local agencies release more information.
