Next week, Orlando is trading in its theme park script for a five-day run of raw, live poetry. The city will host the 34th Annual Southern Fried Poetry Slam Festival, a multi-day spoken-word tournament bringing hundreds of poets and teams to stages across Orlando and nearby Eatonville. Competitors will go head-to-head with punchy, personal pieces in judge-scored bouts, themed showcases, and late-night open mics, in what organizers describe as a chance to put Orlando's growing literary arts scene on a national platform.
Host City, Dates And Kickoff
The festival is being hosted by the Literary Arts Council of Central Florida and opens next Tuesday, running through the following Saturday, according to the Literary Arts Council of Central Florida.
Organizers say more than 200 poets are expected, including 32 competing teams and 32 independent competitors, with nearly $20,000 in prize money on the line and a $5,000 top prize for the winning team, as reported by WFTV. The lineup mixes long-established slam squads with up-and-coming independent voices from across the Southeast and beyond.
Festival Venues And Schedule
Preliminary bouts, workshops, and showcases are set for downtown cultural hubs, including the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Public Library, CityArts, and the JB Callahan Community Center. Southern Fried Poetry's official schedule features pop-up readings, themed slams, and a community cookout spread across Orlando and Eatonville, according to Southern Fried Poetry, Inc.
Shawn Welcome, the festival’s host city ambassador and a former Orlando poet laureate, said, "Orlando has always had a vibrant literary and spoken word community — we have been building it for years, brick by brick, mic by mic," according to WFTV. He and other organizers told Watermark Out News the Eatonville kickoff will foreground Zora Neale Hurston's legacy and draw national attention to the town's literary history.
Tickets And What To Know
Tickets, volunteer sign-ups, and the full schedule are available through the festival's official channels. Details on pricing, bout locations, and volunteer shifts can be found via Southern Fried Poetry, Inc. and the festival's ticket partner on Givebutter.
Why It Matters
Local arts leaders describe landing Southern Fried as a milestone that brings national audiences and new opportunities for Orlando-area poets and organizers. As outlined by Artistry Magazine, the festival's #ReviveZora programming and workshops aim to pair national talent with local artists and young writers, an investment organizers hope will deepen Orlando's literary infrastructure.
Expect busy nights and late shows across downtown stages and Eatonville next week as visiting poets compete and local artists roll out new work. For exact bout locations, schedules, and tickets, check the festival's Givebutter page.
